Helen Mary Tuskiewicz (LACW), born on January 27, 1924, was a remarkable individual whose resilience and determination defined her life. After the profound loss of both her parents, Helen began working as a teenager at the Ford Motor Plant in Michigan. Driven by a deeper desire to serve her country, she sought to join the military. When her age became a barrier in the U.S., she courageously crossed the border into Canada, enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
During her service, Helen was assigned to England, where she became the dedicated driver for Olgierd Tuskiewicz, who served as the Commandant of the Polish Air Force Staff College from 1943 to 1946. Their shared experiences during the war led to a deep bond, and they married after the conflict ended. Together, returning to Detroit, where they built a life filled with love and resilience.
A lifelong animal lover, Helen’s compassion extended to all creatures great and small. It is truly a privilege to have a tribute service puppy named in her honor, completing the circle of her remarkable story and reflecting the love she had for animals throughout her life. Though she is no longer with us, Helen’s mantra was always about moments “meant to be,” and this tribute feels like one of those beautifully destined moments, ensuring her legacy of bravery and kindness will forever inspire those who knew her.
It’s important to highlight that later in life, Helen fought to have her service with the RCAF during World War II recognized by the United States. She succeeded in this endeavor when the U.S. acknowledged the sacrifices she made during her time with the RCAF. This recognition affirmed her dedication and valor, culminating in her receiving military honors at her burial.
