Henry Francis O’Neill, known to all who loved him simply as Hank.
Hank’s life was defined by service, dedication, faith, and family. At just 17 years old, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed in Hawaii during World War 2 and was honorably discharged shortly after the war.
When his military service ended, Hank returned home to the neighborhood where his story began—Hell’s Kitchen, New York. There, he embarked on another life of service, joining the New York City Fire Department. For many years, he answered alarms throughout the city, serving in all five boroughs and dedicating himself to protecting the lives of others. Through courage, leadership, and commitment, he rose through the ranks and retired as a Lieutenant in the FDNY, earning the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters.
While building a distinguished career, Hank also built a beautiful family. He met the love of his life, Patricia Colwell, and together they created a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and values. They raised three children, and Hank took immense pride in being a husband, father, and role model.
Hank was very athletic and especially loved the game of basketball. Hank shared his passion for the game by coaching both boys’ and girls’ basketball, teaching not only skills and strategy but also teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and confidence. To the many young athletes he coached, he was far more than a coach—he was a mentor and an example of integrity.
Hank’s commitment to his community extended beyond his family and profession. He was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was an active participant in his parish and the Catholic Youth Organization. His faith was not merely something he practiced on Sundays; it was something he lived every day through service, kindness, generosity, and a willingness to help others.
Whether as a Marine, a firefighter, a husband, a father, a coach, a parishioner, or a friend, Hank lived a life of purpose. He showed us what it means to serve others, to lead by example, and to remain devoted to family, faith, and community.
His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the family he cherished, the young people he mentored, and the example he set for all who knew him.
