paws4people was founded in 1999.
We are headquartered in Wilmington, NC.
We have 9 full-time staff members.
At any given time, paws4people has up to 150 dogs in various stages of our training process.
We do not use a “puppy raiser model.” Instead, our dogs always live with a trainer. As puppies, this is either in a Puppy Development Center (ILM or Mid-Atlantic region) or in a home as part our Puppy Host Family Program!
paws4people is a part of the West Virginia Department of Corrections and we utilize approx. 130 inmate trainers in 5 state prisons via our paws4prisons program to teach our dogs all of their basic and advanced obedience commands.
95 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to towards our programs, dogs, and clients.
In 2016 we broke the $1M/year revenue mark for the first time ever!
paws4people has a compounded average growth rate of 143% in the past 7 years.
The paws4vets program started in 2008.
We customize Assistance Dogs for 2 groups, primarily: children and veterans.
The graduation rate for our dogs is 92%.
We place an average of 40-50 Assistance Dogs each year.
We place our dogs at no cost to the client.
paws4prisons just had its 10th anniversary in 2016!
The UNCW Assistance Dog Training Program (ADTP) it the only one of its kind in the country.
The UNCW ADTP completed its 6th full academic year in May of 2017.
7 graduates of the p4p/UNCW ADTP are now employed full or part-time with paws4people.
About 1,000 students have participated in the UNCW ADTP program coursework and more than 100 students have completed the full program, earning their certificate as a certified paws4people Assistance Dog Public Access Trainer. Over 55,000 documented volunteer hours have been completed by these students within the Wilmington community as part of the program.
Dogs are always owned by paws4people and placed on a custody contract with the client or handler. This allows us to insure our certified working teams, further protecting and supporting our dogs, clients, and handlers.
Currently, we have over 500 AD certified, insured, and working Assistance Dog Teams throughout 25 states and Canada.
In 2016 we graduated 47 Assistance Dogs, both Service and Facility Dogs!
Our Assistance Dogs are valued at approximately $63,000.
Our Facility Dogs are valued at approximately $59,000.
Dogs bred in our internal breeding program start training at 3 days old, before they can hear or see!
Dogs BUMP around 1 year old. A BUMP is where the dog chooses the person they want to work for! We let the dogs choose their clients (along with some help from our staff) to allow for flexibility and success in our teams.
All dogs must recertify annually to remain certified and insured as a working team through paws4people.
