SSgt Dustin Baker, USAF (ret.)

Dustin Baker joined the Air Force in April 1999. While stationed in Incirlik Turkey in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Northern Watch, and Operation Iraq Freedom. Dustin was injured resulting in 1 collapsed disc, 1 fractured vertebra, and 3 herniated disk. After finishing his tour he returned to the U.S where due to his injuries he was medically separated from the Air Force in 2006. Shortly after Dustin had surgery to prevent further damage, having his tailbone to mid-spine fused with metal cages. Unfortunately due to the length of time before surgery Dustin has limited mobility and partial loss of feeling in both legs. After leaving active duty service Dustin still felt the need to serve and moved to government service, working for the U.S Navy Special Warfighting Products office, and now with the Air Force's 14 Weather Squadron located in Asheville, North Carolina. Due to experiences during multiple operations, Dustin lives with PTS, depression, anxiety attacks, and relies on the use of a wheelchair, limiting mobility and independence.

Dustin is married to Jodie Baker and has three children. Dustin enjoys leading his son's Cub Scout pack, helping with his daughter's Girl Scout pack, and hand-cycling. With the aide of his service dog, NOLEN, Dustin has improved his quality of life by reducing his anxiety, depression and side effects of PTS; while at the same time getting desperately needed support with day-to-day tasks such as opening doors or picking up dropped keys. In addition, NOLEN has helped Dustin "break out of his shell" and venture more into public places that have been hard for him to frequent due to PTS.
