Monty’s Home Meet and Greet
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a Monty’s Home meet and greet. Monty’s Home is a program where five dogs are rescued from shelters after a 19 step temperment evaluation. This dogs are microchipped, vaccinated, and spaed or neutered and placed in a prison system. While in the prison the dogs undergo a nine week training program and the entire time they are trained by inmates. Monty’s Home provides a postive experience for the inmates and increases the number of dogs adopted from a shelter.
The meet and greet at Aunt Kerry’s Pet Stop gave potential adopters the chance to meet the dogs in the current class and determine their compatability with the dogs. Additionally, it gives the organization a place to educate passersby that haven’t yet heard of the program. Finally, it is used as a fundraiser with donations accepted and 50/50 raffle tickets sold.
While I was at the meet and greet I helped ell raffle tickets, promote the Pet Expo which is their biggest fundraiser of the year, and assisted with set up and break down. I also learned a lot more about the organization just by standing and listening to the volunteers. I think one of the most exciting part of volunteering was when previous adopters came by just to say hello. These people exemplified the impact the program made and it ws great to see that the dogs still interacted with the volunteers.
